In 1973, when India's tiger population had dwindled to just 1,827, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi took a bold decision—launching "Project Tiger," under which nine sanctuaries across the country, including Ranthambore, were dedicated to tiger conservation. 1 Introduction to Biodiversity – Definition and Levels

Biodiversity (short for biological diversity) refers to the variety of all living organisms—plants, animals, and microorganisms—on Earth, and the complex relationships among them and their environments. The term was first proposed by Walter G. Rosen in 1985, and became a central theme of global policy following the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.
