टेलर (A.J.P.
(World War I, 1914-1918)
(Causes of WWI)
क. (Alliance System)
(Member Countries) |
|---|
(Austria-Hungary) |
(Russia) |
(Allied Powers) |
ख. (Long-Term Causes)
ग. (Immediate Cause)
(Slavic Nationalist Secret Group)

- Contribution of Rajasthan (Rajasthan Connection)
Two world wars in the 20th century shook human civilization. World War I (1914-1918) destroyed empires, ended monarchies, and gave birth to new nations. World War II (1939-1945) ushered in the Nuclear Age, ended colonialism, and gave birth to an organization like the United Nations. Historian A.J.P. Taylor: "The Treaty of Versailles contained the seeds of another war."
💡 Understand World War II in simple language
Imagine two large landowners living as neighbors in a village in Rajasthan. They had an old rivalry, a dispute over farmland. They formed separate alliances. Over a trivial matter—the murder of a leader—the entire village fought among themselves (WWI). So much bloodshed and destruction ensued that a settlement was reached—but the terms were so harsh that the defeated landowner vowed revenge. Twenty years later, war broke out again (WWII)—this time even more horrific. This is the story of both world wars.
Part A: World War I (1914-1918)
1Causes of WWI
A. Alliance System
| Alliance | Year | Member Countries |
|---|
| Triple Alliance | 1882 | Germany + Italy + Austria-Hungary |
| Triple Entente | 1907 | France + Britain + Russia |
| Result | By 1914 | Europe was divided into two groups – the Central Powers versus the Allied Powers. |
B. Long-Term Causes
1. Aggressive Nationalism: Kaiser Wilhelm II's Weltpolitik policy—Naval Expansion, Colonial Expansion, interference in world affairs.
2. Anglo-German Rivalry: Germany surpassed Britain in coal and iron. Kiel Canal + Berlin-Baghdad Railway—threat to Britain's Eastern Colonies.
3. Franco-German Hostility: Defeat by Germany in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871—Loss of Alsace-Lorraine—Sentiment of revenge in France.
4. Imperialist Rivalry: Germany and Italy feel the delay in colonies – compete for space in Africa and Asia.
5. Pan-Slavism: Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia in 1908 – enraging Serbia and Russia.
6. Arms Race: All major powers expanded their armies and navies – preparing for war.
7. Press and Propaganda: Newspapers incited extreme nationalism and exaggerated events.
C. Immediate Cause
- June 1914: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Bosnia
► Assassin: Black Hand — Slavic Nationalist Secret Group
- Austria-Hungary saw the assassination as an opportunity to advance its ambitions against Serbia.
- Austria's ultimatum to Serbia—mostly accepted, but not fully—declared war.
- The Alliance System dragged everyone in → turned into a World War

B. Treaty of Versailles (1919)
The Paris Peace Conference took place in January 1919. The "Big Four"—Woodrow Wilson of the United States, Lloyd George of Britain, Clemenceau of France, and Orlando of Italy—made the decisions.
| Provision | Details | Impact |
|---|
| 1. War Guilt Clause – Article 231 | Germany bears full responsibility for WWI – the basis for reparations | Feelings of humiliation in Germany |
| 2. War Reparations | ~$33 million ($33 billion) — ₹40+ lakh crore in today's terms | German economy collapses, hyperinflation |
| 3. Military Restrictions | Army: Only 100,000 soldiers. No tanks, artillery, or aircraft. The Rhineland is demilitarized. | Germany was weak—but Hitler broke it in 1935 |
| 4. Territorial Losses | One-eighth of Europe's land and 7 million people were lost. Alsace-Lorraine → France. Danzig = Free City | German nationalism emerged |
| 5. Economic Losses | 2/3 coal mines, 2/3 iron, 70% zinc, 15% agricultural land, 12% cattle | German industry devastated |
"The Treaty of Versailles contained the seeds of a second war." — A.J.P. Taylor, Historian
