After World War II, the world was divided into two camps – on one side the capitalist democracy of the USA and on the other side the communism of the USSR. The tension, rivalry and conflict that emerged between the two – without direct war – is called the Cold War. Historian John Lewis Gaddis: "The Cold War arose from mutual distrust and security fear."
Imagine there are two big stores in the neighborhood—one "America Store" (Capitalism) and the other "Soviet Store" (Communism). They don't destroy each other—because both have atomic bombs. But they draw every small store (country) into their fold, engage in espionage, spread propaganda, and fight small wars (Proxy Wars). This is the Cold War—a fierce rivalry without direct conflict.
