(Fascism in Italy)
(Detail) |
|---|---|
(Nazism in Germany)

Nazism and Fascism—two of the most dangerous ideologies of the 20th century—destroyed democracy and human rights and established dictatorships. Benito Mussolini created Fascism in Italy, and Adolf Hitler created Nazism in Germany. These ideologies led to World War II and the Holocaust—the largest genocide in history.
Imagine a village struck by a terrible famine. A leader stands up and says: "I will save you—but you must obey me without question." He unites everyone (one nation, one leader), labels foreigners as enemies, and gradually seizes power. This is what Mussolini and Hitler were like—they emerged in an economic crisis, gained power with false promises, and killed millions.
Part A: Fascism in Italy
The word "fascism" comes from the Latin "fasces"—meaning "bundle of powerful rods"—which symbolized Roman power. Benito Mussolini of Italy made it a political movement in 1919.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Ultra-Nationalism | Nation is supreme—above individual, class, religion. “Everything for the nation, nothing outside the nation.” |
| 2. Dictatorship | A single leader—whose command is supreme—Il Duce (Mussolini) or Führer (Hitler). |
| 3. Anti-Democracy | Parliament, elections, opposition – everything closed. |
| 4. Anti-Communism | Opposition to Marxism and Class Struggle. |
| 5. Militarism | Glory to war and military power – "War is life." |
| 6. Imperialism | Creating new empires – Expansionism. |
| 7. Propaganda and control | State control over media, education, art – everything. |
| 8. Use of violence | Use of violence and terror to suppress opponents. |
A. Benito Mussolini — "Il Duce" (The Leader)
B. March on Rome (October 1922)
Imagine a village leader arriving at the village headman's house with his thugs just before the elections and saying: "Give me the seat." The headman would be frightened and give it to him. This is what happened in Italy in 1922. Mussolini never won an election—but he gained power through intimidation.
A. Political Policies
B. Economic Policies
D. Mussolini's Foreign Policy
End of Mussolini:April 1945: Mussolini is captured and shot by the Italian Resistance while fleeing to Switzerland. His body is hanged upside down in Milan.
Part B: Nazism in Germany
Following the defeat of WWI, Germany established the "Weimar Republic." This was Germany's first democratic experiment—but it was beset with problems from the start.
Imagine having to pay back whatever you borrowed for someone's wedding—and that too with 30 times the interest. No job, no food, no water or electricity in the house. Then someone comes along and says: "The Jews and the Treaty of Versailles are responsible for all these troubles—give me power, I'll fix everything."—this was the rise of Hitler.
A. Adolf Hitler — "Führer" (Leader)
► Only the Aryan race is superior – the rest are inferior.
► Jews = the cause of all the problems in Germany and the world.
► Lebensraum = "Living Space" — German expansion into Eastern Europe.
► Revenge for the Treaty of Versailles.
► Establishment of Greater Germany.
