E.H. Carr (ई. कार) ने कहा: "The Russian Revolution is one of the great turning points in modern history."

(Nature & Stages)

1. Revolution of 190522 Jan 1905Bloody Sunday — Gapon marchTsar ने Duma बनाई — October Manifesto
2. February/March Revolution7-15 March 1917Workers Strike, Soldiers join, Tsar abdicateRomanov Dynasty का अंत — Provisional Govt
Communist State

► मांग: बेहतर काम की शर्तें, political rights, industrial reforms — Petition to Tsar

(Battleship Potemkin)

► Civil rights: Freedom of speech, expression, associations

► State Duma (1906): Representative legislative body

(Political Causes)

A. Tsarist Autocracy —

► "He lacked the ability to understand political changes and public demands" — Connect Civils

► Jews, Poles, Finns, Uzbeks, Tartars, Cossacks, Armenians —

B. Political Parties

दल (Party)नेताविचारधाराजनाधार
Bolsheviks (बोल्शेविक)Vladimir Lenin (लेनिन)Scientific Socialism — Revolution तुरंत — Elite vanguard partyIndustrial workers, radical intellectuals
Mensheviks (मेन्शेविक)Julius Martov (मार्टोव)Gradual, democratic socialist movement — Mass partyModerate socialists, some workers
Socialist Revolutionaries (SR)Victor Chernov (चेर्नोव)Agrarian socialism — land to peasants — terror tacticsPeasants — सबसे बड़ा दल
Kadets (Constitutional Democrats)Paul Milyukov (मिल्युकोव)Liberal — Constitutional Monarchy, civil rightsMiddle class, professionals

► J.M. Roberts: "The gathering of such a large number of workers in one place gave them the opportunity to develop their organizational strength."

A. Socialist Thinkers

Populism

David Thomson (डेविड थॉमसन) ने लिखा: "The Russian Revolution was a direct outcome of the war of 1914-1918."

7February/March Revolution (1917) — Tsarism

(7-15 March 1917)

7 March 1917Workers' Demonstrations in Petrograd:
8 March 1917Women Workers' Strike: Petrograd textile mills की महिलाओं की हड़ताल — "Bread and Peace!"International Women's Day — महिलाओं की अग्रणी भूमिका
February/March Revolution complete
"The workers seized power from the Tsar, but they immediately handed it over to the middle class." — E. Lipson (ई. लिप्सन) — February Revolution पर

February Revolution

8Provisional Govt vs Petrograd Soviet — Dual Power (दोहरी सत्ता)

Provisional Government (अनंतिम सरकार)
  • Kadets + moderate socialists
  • Milyukov (विदेश मंत्री) — annexationist policy
Petrograd Soviet (पेत्रोग्राद सोवियत)
  • Workers + Soldiers representatives
No annexation, no indemnity"
  • Soviet Order No. 1 — military authority
  • Bolsheviks का बढ़ता influence
  • "Peace, Land, Bread" —

Kerensky Government

9October/November Revolution — Bolshevik विजय (7 November 1917)

Revolution

7 November 1917 — Revolution Night

Telephone exchanges, Post offices, Railway stations, Banks, Bridges

5. Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom): Lenin

October Revolution (7 November 1917) = planned, Bolshevik-organized "Textbook Revolution"। Russia का calendar Old Style (Julian) था — इसीलिए February Revolution = March और October Revolution = November।

11Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (ब्रेस्ट-लिटोव्स्क संधि, 3 March 1918)

Ukraine

Red Terror (1918-1921)

Red vs White War

Red Army (लाल सेना)
  • Workers + Peasants
  • Centralized command, clear ideology
  • Cheka (चेका): Secret Police — Felix Dzerzhinsky
White Army (श्वेत सेना)
  • Anti-Bolshevik forces — royalists, moderate socialists, nationalists
  • Britain, France, USA, Japan का समर्थन (Intervention)

(Post-Revolution Developments)

New Economic Policy — NEP (1921-1928)

► "Socialism in One Country" — पहले Russia को मजबूत करो, फिर world revolution

Stalin's Five Year Plans (पंचवर्षीय योजनाएं, 1928-)

► Kulaks (कुलक = rich peasants) का liquidation — "Dekulakization"

1917 — A storm swept through Russia, sweeping away the 300-year-old Romanov dynasty in just eight days. And then another storm eight months later — this time the Bolsheviks took power, creating the world's first Communist state. E.H. Carr said: "The Russian Revolution is one of the great turning points in modern history." This was a turning point not just for Russia, but for the entire 20th century.

💡 Understand the Russian Revolution – in the language of Rajasthan

Imagine, in a village in Rajasthan, there is a Zamindar (Tsar = Landlord) who has been ruling for 300 years. 98% of the farmers are poor, they don't have land, they are in debt, but they don't have freedom of speech. There is a defeat in a neighboring village (like Japan) - the Zamindar loses his respect. In a big conflict like WWI, the village's soldiers are killed, but they don't get bread. One day, the women came out on the streets - "Give us bread!" - then the soldiers also joined in - the Zamindar left his house. This was the February Revolution. Then an organized group (Bolsheviks) gave the slogan - "Peace, Land, Bread" - and took power. This was the October Revolution.

1Russian Revolution – Nature and Stages

The Russian Revolution (1917) was one of the most important events of the 20th century. It ended the Tsarist autocracy and established a revolutionary socialist regime. Historians view it in three phases:

phaseperiodMain eventResults
1. Revolution of 190522 Jan 1905Bloody Sunday — Gapon marchTsar creates Duma — October Manifesto
2. February/March Revolution7-15 March 1917Workers Strike, Soldiers join, Tsar abdicateEnd of the Romanov Dynasty — Provisional Govt
3. October/November Revolution7 Nov 1917The Bolsheviks overthrew the Provisional GovernmentThe world's first Communist State

Textbook Revolution: The Bolshevik Revolution is called a "textbook revolution" because it was organized and carried out according to well-defined planning and programs. It was calculated, not spontaneous.

2The Revolution of 1905—The First Outburst

The 1905 Revolution was the first rehearsal for the Russian Revolution. Leon Trotsky called it a "dress rehearsal for 1917." It was a spontaneous uprising—not a planned one.

► Demands: Better working conditions, political rights, industrial reforms — Petition to Tsar

► Tsarist soldiers fired on unarmed protesters—hundreds were killed

► Result: Russia-wide strikes, peasant revolts, sailors' revolt (Battleship Potemkin)

► Civil rights: Freedom of speech, expression, associations

► State Duma (1906): Promise of a Representative Legislative Body

► But the Tsar gradually reduced the Duma's powers and dissolved it several times.

3Long-term causes – Political Causes

A. Tsarist Autocracy

► "He lacked the ability to understand political changes and public demands" — Connect Civils

► Repressive measures — suppressed political opposition — exile to Siberia

► Rasputin's hold on policy – ministers kept changing – administrative chaos

6Immediate Cause – Impact of World War I (WWI)

David Thomson wrote: "The Russian Revolution was a direct outcome of the war of 1914–1918." WWI forced all of Russia's internal contradictions to explode at once.

► The government printed more currency → inflation increased further

💡 The impact of WWI on Russia — Cricket Analogy

Imagine the Rajasthan team playing in a major tournament. The team was losing, the captain (the Tsar) himself took over coaching—and they lost even more. The players' morale was broken, their families were hungry and had no money. One day, the players declared, "We won't play. We'll go home first." This is what happened in Russia in February 1917—soldiers stopped obeying their officers' orders and joined the Revolution.

7February/March Revolution (1917) — Fall of Tsarism

  • Representation of the middle class and elites
  • The basic demands of the people were not met.
Petrograd Soviet
  • Workers + Soldiers representatives
  • Wanted immediate peace – "No annexation, no indemnity"
  • Land to farmers, factories to workers
  • Soviet Order No. 1 — military authority
  • Growing influence of the Bolsheviks
  • "Peace, Land, Bread" — Voice of the People

Lenin's April Theses (April 1917)

Lenin returned from Switzerland (from the German-arranged "Sealed Train") and presented the April Theses—a roadmap of the Bolsheviks' strategy.

July Days और Kerensky Government

9October/November Revolution — Bolshevik विजय (7 November 1917)

"Peace, Land, Bread"—this three-word slogan was the Bolsheviks' greatest strength. By September 1917, the Bolsheviks had gained a majority in the Petrograd and Moscow Soviets.

Preparation for the Revolution

7 November 1917 — Revolution Night

New Economic Policy — NEP (1921-1928)
