अंत में उन्होंने कहा: "No Taxation Without Representation!"

(Meaning & Nature)

(Background — 13 Colonies)

Tobacco farming, House of Burgesses
Massachusetts1620Mayflower Compact, Puritan settlers, Boston
Pennsylvania1681Quakers, Philadelphia — William Penn

(Economic Causes)

B. Seven Years War

(Intellectual Causes)

A. Enlightenment

► "The Rights of Man" (मनुष्य के अधिकार, 1791) — Democracy और Human Rights का समर्थन

► "The Age of Reason" (1794) — Church

(Political & Social Causes)

A. राजनीतिक कारण

(Immediate Events)

Boston Massacre —

Boston Tea Party —

► Boston Port Act: Boston

► Massachusetts Government Act: Massachusetts

First Continental Congress —

Battle of Lexington and Concord (19

Second Continental Congress —

Declaration

— Declaration of Independence (4 जुलाई 1776) — Thomas Jefferson (थॉमस जेफर्सन)
💡 Declaration of Independence —

Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" लिखा है, वैसे ही America के Declaration में "We hold these truths..."

In 1492, Columbus discovered America, and over the next 200 years, Britain established 13 colonies there. But when Britain imposed arbitrary taxes on these colonies and denied them any representation in Parliament, the American people revolted. On July 4, 1776, when Thomas Jefferson wrote, "All men are created equal"—the world's first modern democratic nation was born. This was the American War of Independence.

💡 Understand the American Revolution — in today's language

Imagine you live in Jaipur and the Delhi government taxes you, but you don't even have the right to vote in Parliament. Delhi decides how you sell your goods, where you sell them—everything. And if you protest, the army is sent in. This was the situation in the 13 American colonies. Finally, they declared: "No Taxation Without Representation!"—and revolution ensued.

1Meaning and Nature

The American War of Independence (American Revolution) was a historical conflict in which the 13 British colonies rebelled against British rule during 1775–1783 and declared themselves an independent nation—the United States of America—on July 4, 1776.

2Background of the 13 Colonies

Following Columbus's discovery of America in 1492, Britain established 13 colonies on the east coast of North America between 1607 and 1732. These colonies were settled primarily by people fleeing religious persecution, economic hardship, or political oppression.

ColonyYear of establishmentMain Feature
Virginia1607First colony, Tobacco farming, House of Burgesses
Massachusetts1620Mayflower Compact, Puritan settlers, Boston
Pennsylvania1681Quakers, Philadelphia — by William Penn
New York1664Wrested from the Dutch, trading center
Georgia1732The 13th and final colony, for debtors
South Carolina1712Rice and Indigo farming, slavery and more

3Reasons – Economic Causes

A. The policy of Mercantilism

Britain's Mercantile Policy stated that the colonies were merely sources of raw materials and markets for British manufactured goods. The colonies could export only to Britain or British-controlled ports.

B. Taxes after the Seven Years' War (1756-1763)

Following the Seven Years' War between Britain and France, Britain was heavily indebted. To pay this debt, Britain imposed new taxes on the American colonies, while the colonies had no representation in Parliament.

► This was the first direct tax on the colonies - there was strong opposition

► The Stamp Act was repealed in 1766, but the Declaratory Act retained Parliament's authority.

Recall:"No Taxation Without Representation" – This slogan of James Otis became the basic mantra of the American Revolution.

► "The Rights of Man" (1791) — Support for democracy and human rights

► "The Age of Reason" (1794) — criticism of the Church

💡 Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" — WhatsApp viral!

In "Common Sense" (1776), Thomas Paine wrote simply: "It is folly that an island (Britain) should rule a whole continent (America)." The pamphlet sold 100,000 copies in three months—viral content in those days! It convinced ordinary Americans that liberty was essential.

5Causes – Political and Social Causes

A. Political reasons

B. Social reasons

6Immediate Events – The Beginning of the Revolution

Boston Massacre (March 5, 1770)

Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773)

To save the East India Company from financial crisis, Britain granted it the right to sell cheap tea in America. This would have caused losses for American merchants. Led by Samuel Adams, about 50 members of the "Sons of Liberty" threw 342 tea chests into the sea from a ship anchored in Boston harbor.

► Boston Port Act: Boston port closed until compensation for tea was paid.

► Massachusetts Government Act: Dissolution of the autonomous government of Massachusetts

"The Boston Tea Party proved one thing – the American people were no longer willing to accept slavery to Britain." — Samuel Adams — organizer of the American Revolution

First Continental Congress (September 5, 1774)

Battle of Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775) — First shot

Second Continental Congress (May 10, 1775)

7Declaration of Independence – July 4, 1776

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared the independence of the 13 colonies. The Declaration of Independence was primarily written by Thomas Jefferson—with assistance from John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.

Key points of the Declaration

"We hold these truths to be self-evident—that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." — Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) — Thomas Jefferson
💡 Declaration of Independence — Compare with Indian Constitution

Just as the Preamble of the Indian Constitution states, "We the people of India... Liberty, Equality, Fraternity," America's Declaration begins with, "We hold these truths..." In both, the sovereignty of the people is supreme. Today, July 4th, is America's Independence Day—just as August 15th is ours.
