(Meaning & Definition)
(Historical Background)
(Causes of Reformation)
A. राजनीतिक कारण (Political Causes)
(Economic Causes)
(Social Causes)
(Intellectual Causes)
(Details) |
|---|

(Indulgences)
(Major Reformers of Reformation)
5.1 John Wycliffe (1320-1384) — "Reformation का भोर का तारा"
- "Morning Star of Reformation"
5.2 Jan Hus (1369-1415) — Czech
5.3 Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) — Florence
- Pope Alexander VI
5.4 Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536) — "Reformation का जनक नहीं, किंतु मार्गदर्शक"
- प्रसिद्ध रचना: "In Praise of Folly" (Moriae Encomium, 1511) — Church की मूर्खता पर व्यंग्य
5.5 Martin Luther (1483-1546) — Protestant Reformation
- Diet of Worms (1521): Emperor Charles V
Luther
3. Grace Alone (Sola Gratia):
4. Priesthood of All Believers:
6. Clerical Celibacy
(Major Works)
| ग्रंथ/Pamphlet | विषय (Theme) |
|---|
| "Address to the German Nobility" (1520) | German
| "Babylonian Captivity of the Church" (1520) | Pope
| "On the Freedom of a Christian" (1520) | Faith Alone

5.7 John Calvin (1509-1564) — Predestination
- प्रमुख ग्रंथ: "Institutes of the Christian Religion" (1536) — Protestant theology की आधारशिला
Switzerland, Netherlands, Scotland, France (Huguenots), England (Puritans)
Anglican Church (1534)
- Henry VIII ने Pope Clement VII से Catherine of Aragon से तलाक मांगा — Pope ने मना किया
- Act of Supremacy (1534): Henry VIII ने खुद को "Church of England का सर्वोच्च प्रमुख" घोषित किया
|---|
| John Wycliffe | 1320-1384 | England | Bible अनुवाद, Pope-विरोध, Lollards |

6.1 Council of Trent (1545-1563) — Catholic
- Pope Paul III

Catholic revival
- "God's Soldiers" —

Imagine a company that claimed to have the keys to heaven, offering money for forgiveness, and burning alive anyone who questioned. This was the Roman Catholic Church of the 16th century. But in 1517, a German professor—Martin Luther—challenged this authority, and the religious map of Europe changed forever. This is what is called the Protestant Reformation.
💡 Understand Reformation – in today's language
Imagine an institution in India saying: "We take contracts—pay the money and your sins are forgiven." And then removing anyone who opposes. In 2011, Anna Hazare led a movement against corruption—in the same way Martin Luther issued his 95 Theses against Church corruption. Just as Anna's movement gave birth to a new politics, Luther's movement gave birth to Protestantism.
1Meaning and Definition
The Reformation was a religious, political, and social movement in 16th-century Europe that challenged the supremacy of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church and divided Christianity into two factions—Catholic and Protestant.
- According to Sebaine: "The Reformation was a great religious movement that broke the monopolistic power of the Church and connected the individual directly with God."
- According to Haze: "This movement was not only a religious revolution, but also a political, economic and cultural revolution."
- According to Davis: "The Reformation ended the monopolistic power of Christianity and gave rise to new denominations—Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anglicanism."
2Historical Background
In the 16th century, the Roman Catholic Church held unprecedented dominance in Medieval Europe. The Pope was considered God's representative—even kings had to obey him. But the Renaissance shook the foundations of this authority. The invention of the printing press rapidly spread new ideas and raised public awareness.
- 14th-15th centuries: The Renaissance sowed the seeds of reason, humanism, and free thought
- Gutenberg's Printing Press (1440): The Bible and new ideas reached the masses
- Rise of the middle class (merchants, artisans): wanted freedom from the economic stranglehold of the Church
- Rise of Nation-States: Kings were troubled by the political interference of the Pope
3Causes of Reformation
A. Political Causes
- Pope's political interference: Popes interfered in the personal lives and state policies of kings.
- The growing power of kings: they wanted to take control of the Church's wealth and influence
- National pride: People began to oppose "foreign" (Roman) rule
► Henry VIII separated all of England from the Catholic Church when the Pope refused to annul his marriage—Act of Supremacy, 1534
B. Economic Causes
- The Church's vast wealth: The Church owned 30-40% of Europe's land, which was tax-free.
- The kings' problem: they needed money to run the state, but could not collect taxes from the Church.
- Opposition from merchants: The Church considered interest-taking a sin—an obstacle to the development of capitalism.
- Simony (selling of positions): High positions were bought with money, regardless of merit.
C. Social Causes
- Corruption of the clergy: The higher clergy lived a life of luxury, cut off from the laity
- Rise of the middle class: The merchant class wanted freedom from the restrictive policies of the Church.
- Public discontent: Anger was growing against the various ills of the Church.
D. Intellectual Causes
- Impact of Renaissance: Reason and individual thinking were encouraged, blind obedience to the Church was questioned
- Humanism: Thinkers like Erasmus, Dante, Boccaccio attacked the morality of the Church
- Progress of Science: Copernicus' heliocentric theory challenged the beliefs of the Church.
- Printing Press: Rapid spread of new ideas—Luther's 95 Theses spread throughout Germany within weeks
💡 Understand the economic reason – in today's language
Imagine a large trust in Rajasthan with no land tax, owning property across half of Jaipur, and obstructing the government in every way. Any government would be troubled by this. This was the situation of the Church in Europe—kings saw empty treasuries while the Church's coffers kept filling.
| Cause | Details |
|---|
| Renaissance influence | Independent thinking, questioning obedience to the Church |
| Corruption of the Church | Simony (selling of positions), luxurious living, immorality |
| commercial purpose | Kings objected to the Church's tax-free property and restrictions on merchants. |
| Rise of the middle class | Merchants wanted freedom from the economic constraints of the Church |
| Scientific advancements | Copernicus's theory contradicted the beliefs of the Church |
| Pope's intervention | The king was annoyed by the Pope's interference in state affairs. |
| Rise of nationalism | Opposition to the dominance of the "foreign" Roman Church |

4Immediate Cause – Indulgences
In 1517, Pope Leo X needed money to build St. Peter's Basilica (Rome). To do this, the Church sent a Dominican priest, Johann Tetzel, to Germany to sell indulgences. Tetzel's slogan was: "As soon as the coin falls into the vessel, the soul flies to heaven." This enraged Martin Luther, and he affixed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.
Important: Indulgences = Church-issued certificates of forgiveness of sins for a fee. This was one of the Church's greatest evils.
5Major Reformers of Reformation
5.1 John Wycliffe (1320-1384) — "The Morning Star of the Reformation"
- Oxford University scholars—the first pioneers of the Reformation
- Opinion: The Pope's authority is wrong, the Bible is the only religious authority
- Translated the Bible into English so that the general public could read it.
- Calls for confiscation of Church property — Dominant Pope-State separation
- Received the title of "Morning Star of Reformation"
- His followers were called Lollards – the Church even burned their bones after death
5.2 Jan Hus (1369-1415) — Czech reformer, martyr
- Professor at Prague University — inspired by Wycliffe's ideas
- Opinion: Direct contact with God through the Bible, no church mediation necessary
- The Council of Constance (1415) declared him a "heretic"

- His martyrdom gave rise to the Czech Hussite movement
5.3 Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) — The Firebrand Priest of Florence
- Dominican friar of Florence — a staunch critic of the Pope's luxury
- Promoted a simple, ascetic life—"Bonfire of the Vanities"—burned luxuries
- Disobeyed the orders of Pope Alexander VI
- Burned alive in 1498 – a symbol of Church tyranny
5.4 Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536) — "Not the father of the Reformation, but its guide"
- Great humanist scholar from Holland
- Famous work: "In Praise of Folly" (Moriae Encomium, 1511)—a satire on the foolishness of the Church
- New Greek version of the New Testament published
- Erasmus wanted to reform the Church, not split it—so he remained Catholic
- "Erasmus laid the egg, Luther hatched it"—this is the famous saying
"Erasmus did the Pope even more harm than Luther did—because he told the truth in jest." — Commentary by contemporary historians
5.5 Martin Luther (1483-1546) — Leader of the Protestant Reformation
Martin Luther was a key figure in the Reformation. Born in Eisleben, Germany, Luther first studied law and then, after surviving a severe storm in 1505, became an Augustinian monk. Becoming a professor of theology at Wittenberg University, he led the rebellion against the Church in 1517.
Luther's 95 Theses (31 October 1517)
- 95 Theses (list of questions/arguments) posted on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg
- Main topic: Strong opposition to the sale of indulgences
- With the help of the printing press, it spread throughout Germany within a few weeks.

💡 Luther's 95 Theses — WhatsApp Forward as it was back then!
Today, if someone posts 95 arguments against a major government policy on social media, it can go viral—the same thing happened in 1517. The printing press spread the 95 Theses throughout Germany within a few weeks. Truly, the printing press was the internet of those days!
Luther's main doctrines
1. Faith Alone (Sola Fide): Salvation comes only through faith in God, not through church rituals.
2. Bible Alone (Sola Scriptura): The Bible is the sole religious authority, not the Pope
3. Grace Alone (Sola Gratia): Only God's grace gives salvation, not money.
4. Priesthood of All Believers: Every believer can contact God himself, no priest is needed
5. Only 3 Sacraments: Baptism, Confession, Eucharist (versus Catholic's 7)
6. Opposition to Clerical Celibacy: Clergy have the right to marry
7. Supremacy of Kings: The national ruler is the head of the church, not the church.

💡 Calvin's Predestination — like cricket team selection?
Calvin believed: God has already decided who is "selected" (heaven) and who is "dropped" (hell). But you won't know—just keep working hard. That's why Calvinists became very hardworking and disciplined. Weber said: It was this Calvinist ethics that gave birth to modern capitalism.
5.8 Henry VIII और Anglican Church (1534)
- The main reason for the Reformation in England was political, not religious.
- Henry VIII asked Pope Clement VII for a divorce from Catherine of Aragon—the Pope refused.
- Act of Supremacy (1534): Henry VIII declared himself "Supreme Head of the Church of England"
