A. शाब्दिक अर्थ
- Venice, Florence
► Francis Bacon ने कहा: "Knowledge is Power" — Printing Press ने इसे साकार किया।
- Black Death (14

► "Divine Comedy (Divina Commedia)" —
► "Vita Nuova" —
► "Sonnets to Laura" —
► "Lives of Illustrious Men" — 31 प्रसिद्ध रोमन व्यक्तित्वों की जीवनियाँ।
► "Familiar Letters" —
- Boccaccio (बोकेसियो): "Decameron" — 100 कहानियों का संग्रह; "Genealogy of Gods।"
- Geoffrey Chaucer — 1340-1400: "अंग्रेजी काव्य के पिता।"
- Sir Thomas More: "Utopia" —
- Christopher Marlowe: "Tamburlaine the Great", "Doctor Faustus", "Edward II", "The Jew of Malta।"
- William Shakespeare — 1564-1616: महानतम नाटककार। "Romeo & Juliet", "Hamlet", "Macbeth", "Merchant of Venice।"
- Edmund Spenser: "Faerie Queene" —
- Erasmus (इरेस्मस) — हॉलैंड: "Praise of Folly (In Praise of Folly)" — पादरियों की अज्ञानता और पाखंड पर व्यंग्यपूर्ण प्रहार।
- Marsilius — 1275-1342: "Defensor Pacis" —
Hamlet की dilemma "To be or not to be" — यह सिर्फ नाटक की line नहीं, मानव जीवन की सबसे बड़ी philosophical question है।
A. चित्रकला (Painting)
► "The Last Supper" — स्थान: Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan।
► "The Virgin of the Rocks" — Virgin Mary,
- Raphael: "Madonna" —
- Titian (Vecellio): कुलीन महिलाओं के चित्र; प्रसिद्ध रचना: "Man with a Glove।"
B. मूर्तिकला (Sculpture)
(Architecture)
💡 Leonardo da Vinci — "The Last Supper" — RAS 2021
RAS Mains 2021 में प्रश्न आया: "Leonardo da Vinci की प्रसिद्ध पेंटिंग The Last Supper कहाँ बनाई?"
| Isaac Newton |
| René Descartes |
| Francis Bacon | इंग्लैंड | "Knowledge is Power" — Empirical Method | वैज्ञानिक प्रयोग पद्धति का प्रतिपादन |
कहा जाता है उन्होंने मरने से पहले कहा: "Eppur si muove" (And yet it moves — फिर भी [पृथ्वी] घूमती है)।

(Ideological)
(Scientific-Cultural)
- RAS Mains में "Renaissance के कारण" — 10 अंक: पाँच "I" याद रखें — Italy, Innovation (Printing Press), Interaction (Crusades), Intellect (Humanism), Inheritance (Classical Greek-Roman texts)।
- भारत से connection: Renaissance → Reformation → Enlightenment → French Revolution → National Movements → Indian Independence।
आज की democratic values, scientific thinking, freedom of expression — सब के बीज Renaissance में हैं।
- Renaissance → Colonialism → British India → Rajputana में British Residency।

Imagine—14th-century Europe. Darkness everywhere. Whatever the Church said, it was true, whatever the Church said, it was false. The Earth is the center of the universe—this was the "truth." Galileo looked at the sky through a telescope and said, "No, the sun is the center"—and he was imprisoned! After such a dark age, when a new dawn arrived in Italy—art awakened, science awakened, humanity awakened—this awakening is called the "Renaissance."
💡 What is Renaissance - Simplest Example
Just as people embraced online learning, digital work, and new technology from scratch after the COVID-19 lockdown—shedding old ways and finding new paths—so too, 14th-century Europe emerged from the "intellectual lockdown" of the Dark Ages and rediscovered knowledge, art, and science. This is the Renaissance!
1Meaning and Definitions
A. Literal meaning
- "Renaissance" — is a French word meaning "rebirth."
- The term was first used by the Italian historian-artist Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century to describe revolutionary changes in architecture and sculpture.
- In the 18th century, French scholar Diderot also used this word for the new creation of art and literature.
B. Definitions of leading scholars
- Henry S. Lucas: "The Renaissance refers to the changes in medieval thought and cultural patterns that developed in Italy after the 13th century and spread to other parts of Europe by 1600."
- Professor David: "The word Renaissance expresses the freedom-loving and courageous thoughts of man who were imprisoned by the clergy in the Middle Ages."
- J.E. Sain: "Renaissance is a term which collectively expresses all the mental changes of the late medieval and modern times."
- Jules Michelet: Described the two broad dimensions of the Renaissance – "the discovery of the world and the discovery of man."
period: Generally between 1350 AD and 1550 AD (some scholars also believe 1300–1600)
2Background – The Dark Ages
To understand the Renaissance, it is first necessary to know what came before it – the "Dark Ages," that is, the dark world of the Middle Ages.
😴 The Dark Ages – What Were They?
- The Church's Absolute Dominance—From Birth to Death
- intellectual development is completely stunted
- Superstition instead of logic
- "The Earth is the Center of the Universe" — Church Commandment
- Literature in Latin only—the vernacular languages were "uncivilized"
- Feudalism – exploitation by kings and priests
- Scientific thinking = sin
🌅 Renaissance – What Changed?
- Human-Centered Thinking – The Importance of Human Beings
- Emphasis on logic, experimentation, and observation
- Copernicus: The Sun is at the center
- Literature in vernacular languages – reaching the common people
- Rise of the middle class – prosperity through trade
- Realism in Art – Freedom from Religion
- Foundations of the Scientific Revolution
3Why Italy first? — 7 reasons
The new ideology of the Renaissance began in Italy. Historians believe that in Italy, the achievements of the ancient Roman Empire were dimly visible, and the tradition of acquiring knowledge had not been completely interrupted.
1. A major center of foreign trade—Italy's Mediterranean location was ideal for trade with Arabia and Asia. This led to the rise of a prosperous middle class that began to disregard the Church's control.
2. The establishment of prosperous cities—cities like Naples, Florence, Milan, and Venice—became trading centers. Patrons like the Medici family patronized artists and scholars.
3. Rise of the prosperous middle class – This class became so powerful that it did not care about the feudal lords and the Pope and did not believe in medieval beliefs.
4. Contact with the rich culture of the East—The culture of Asian traders attracted Italians. The contrast between European ignorance and Eastern prosperity gave rise to the Renaissance.
5. In Italy—the birthplace of ancient Roman civilization—the monuments of ancient Rome in the cities inspired a revival of their glory. This made Italy a focal point of the Renaissance.
6. Scholars flocked to Italy after the fall of Constantinople (1453 AD): Greek scholars and artists came to Italy after the fall of the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire to the Turks. They brought ancient Greek literature, which was new to Europe.
7. Changes in the nature of education – Trade and economic prosperity led to the need for geography, business, science, logic-based subjects which formed the basis of the Renaissance.
💡 Why in Italy? – Rajasthan example
Just as Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan—tourism, commerce, and heritage all in one place—was the first to develop, so too was Florence and Venice in Italy—a combination of commerce, ancient Roman heritage, and wealthy patrons (the Medici family). That's why "Jaipur" became Italy during the Renaissance!
4Causes of the Renaissance
A. Impact of the Crusades (11th–13th centuries)
- During the Crusades, Europeans came into contact with Eastern civilizations.
- Knowledge like Hindu numerals (0-9), algebra, compass, paper, gunpowder reached Europe from the Arabs.
- Returning from the war, people became disinterested in their narrow lives – the search for new ideas began.
- Scholars like Bessarion reached Italy with 800 manuscripts.
B. Business prosperity
- The expansion of trade led to the rise of new cities and the creation of international trading centres.
- This commercial prosperity gave birth to a new rich class in Europe which patronized art and literature.
- Venice and Florence became centers of trade – also laboratories for new ideas.
C. invention of paper and printing press
- Europeans learned the art of papermaking from the Arabs in the Middle Ages.
- 1440-50 AD – Johannes Gutenberg of Germany invented the printing press.
- 1477 AD – Caxton established the first printing press in Britain.
- This led to the spread of ancient Greek-Roman literature and ended the monopoly of a particular class on knowledge.
► Francis Bacon said: "Knowledge is Power"—the printing press made it a reality.
D. Fall of Constantinople (1453 AD)
- The Turks captured Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
- Greek scholar-artists came to Italy—bringing ancient Greek manuscripts with them.
- Europe was introduced to ancient knowledge – the Renaissance received new energy.
E. Growth of humanism
- Humanist writers like Petrarch emphasized human experience over the asceticism of religious texts.
- Questions started being raised on the blind faith of the Church and the Pope.
F. Other reasons
- The Mongol Empire facilitated the exchange of ideas between Asia and Europe. Marco Polo's travels inspired Europeans.
- Black Death (14th century) — millions died from plague — people began looking for answers in science rather than religion.
- Decline of feudalism – Population increased in cities, education and curiosity got promoted.
- Wealthy patrons like the Medici family provided financial support to artists and scientists.

6Influence on literature
Before the Renaissance, literature in Europe was produced only in Latin and Greek—vernacular languages were considered "uncivilized." The Renaissance freed literature from the confines of the Church and brought it into the common languages.
Major Italian writers
- Dante Alighieri — 1265-1321: Pioneer of the Renaissance.
► "Divine Comedy (Divina Commedia)"—most famous work; discusses sin, salvation, and the nature of the soul.
► "De Monarchia"—a political treatise—speaks of the unification of Italy under the leadership of the Holy Roman Empire.
► "Vita Nuova" — collection of love songs.
- Francesco Petrarch — 1304–1374: "Father of Humanism".
► "Sonnets to Laura"—love poems in Italian—are a hallmark of the Renaissance.
► "Lives of Illustrious Men" — biographies of 31 famous Roman figures.
► "Familiar Letters" — letters to ancient authors — tributes to classical thought.
► Petrarch popularized the "Sonnet" (14-line poem).
- Boccaccio: "The Decameron"—a collection of 100 stories; "Genealogy of the Gods."
- Machiavelli: "The Prince" — Founder of modern political science; "Separated politics from religion." — Called the "Chanakya of modern politics."
French writers
- François Rabelais: "Gargantua and Pantagruel" — a symbol of the unlimited possibilities of humankind.
- Montaigne: Father of the literary genre "Essay".
English writers
- Geoffrey Chaucer—1340–1400: "Father of English Poetry." Works: "Canterbury Tales"—First artistic use of the East Midland (Saxon) dialect. This led to the emergence of the national language, English.
- Sir Thomas More: "Utopia" – Imagination of an idealistic society, description of the social evils of the time.
- Christopher Marlowe: "Tamburlaine the Great", "Doctor Faustus", "Edward II", "The Jew of Malta।"
- William Shakespeare — 1564-1616: Greatest playwright. "Romeo & Juliet," "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "The Merchant of Venice." — Presented the conflict between feudal and middle-class society.
- Edmund Spenser: "Faerie Queene"—a glimpse of nationalism and materialism.
Writers from other countries
- Erasmus – Holland: "In Praise of Folly" – a satirical attack on the ignorance and hypocrisy of the clergy.
- Marsilius — 1275-1342: "Defensor Pacis" — Critic of papal political interference.
- Miguel de Cervantes (Spain): "Don Quixote" — a parody of feudalism.
💡 Understand Shakespeare – in the language of cricket
Just as Sachin Tendulkar gave a new dimension to cricket, Shakespeare did the same to English theatre. Before him, there was drama, but after Shakespeare, the drama of "human psychology" began. Hamlet's dilemma "To be or not to be"—this isn't just a line from a play, it's the biggest philosophical question of human life. In RAS Mains, write Shakespeare's name as "Renaissance England's greatest contribution."
7Influence on art
A. Painting
The biggest change in Renaissance art was that artists moved away from religious themes and began to depict human emotions, nature, and reality. Canvas replaced wood, and the tradition of oil painting began.
- Leonardo da Vinci — 1452-1519: "Renaissance Man" — painter, sculptor, scientist, mathematician, engineer, musician — all in one.
► "Mona Lisa" — mysterious smile; use of the "sfumato" technique (blurred transition).
► "The Last Supper" — Location: Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan. A wonderful depiction of the emotions of Jesus' 12 disciples.
► "The Virgin of the Rocks" — Virgin Mary, Infant Jesus, St. John and an angel.
► Vitruvian Man — a scientific depiction of the proportions of the human body.
- Michelangelo — 1475-1564: "David", "Sistine Chapel ceiling" (Rome) — Painted the ceiling over 4 years on the orders of Pope Julius II.
- Raphael: "Madonna"—a beautiful depiction of the divine feminine.
- Titian (Vecellio): Portraits of noble women; magnum opus: "Man with a Glove."
B. Sculpture
Renaissance sculpture broke free from the shackles of religion and became connected to broader contexts.
- Lorenzo Ghiberti: The beautiful doors of the Cathedral of Florence—depicting scenes from the Old Testament. Michelangelo called them the "Gates of Paradise."
- Donatello: Naturalistic sculpture, free from medieval constraints.
- Michelangelo's "Pietà"—5 feet 9 inches tall; the Virgin Mary holds the dead Christ in her arms.
C. Architecture
- A synthesis of ancient Greek and Roman styles—columns and horizontal lines from Greece, domes, arches, and grandeur from Rome.
- Examples: Florence Cathedral (Brunelleschi's dome) and St. Peter's Basilica (Rome).
💡 Leonardo da Vinci — "The Last Supper" — asked at RAS 2021!
The question in RAS Mains 2021 was: "Where did Leonardo da Vinci paint his famous painting, The Last Supper?" Answer: In the Santa Maria delle Grazie church in Milan. This painting is in the Fresco technique, in which colors are applied to wet plaster on the wall. This painting depicts the moment when Jesus said, "One of you will betray me." The 12 different expressions of the 12 disciples—this is Renaissance Realism.
8Impact on Science – Foundation of the Scientific Revolution
The Renaissance freed humans from the control of religion and allowed them to think freely. Francis Bacon said: "Knowledge can only be acquired through observation and experiment." The 16th century marked the beginning of the Scientific Revolution in Europe.
| Scientist | Country | Contribution | Importance |
|---|
| Nicolaus Copernicus | Poland | Heliocentric Theory — Earth revolves around the Sun (1543) | Challenging the Church's Geocentric Theory |
| Giordano Bruno | Italy | Support for Copernicus's theory | Burned Alive by the Church — Science vs. Religion |
| Johannes Kepler | Germany | Copernicus's theory was proved by mathematical proof. | Laws of Planetary Motion |
| Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) | Italy | Principle of pendulum, air meter, improvement of telescope | Church imprisoned him in his home |
| Isaac Newton | England | Theory of Gravitation (1687) | Natural law – not divine power |
| René Descartes | France | application of algebra to geometry | Foundations of modern mathematics |
| Francis Bacon | England | "Knowledge is Power" — Empirical Method | Introduction of scientific method |
| Andreas Vesalius | Belgium | the scientific study of the human body | Foundations of Modern Anatomy |
💡 Galileo's Story – "Yet the Earth turns!"
Galileo used a telescope to discover that Jupiter had four moons—meaning not everything revolved around the Earth! The Church declared him a "Heretic" and imprisoned him. It is said that before he died, he said: "Eppur si muove" (And yet it moves—yet the Earth turns). This is the essence of the Renaissance—the courage to fight the greatest power for the truth.
9Humanism – The Spirit of the Renaissance
The Renaissance's most profound influence was on the human perspective. Humanist thinkers rejected the asceticism and spirituality of religious texts and embraced beauty, human love, and material pleasures as the essence of life.
1. Development of the sense of expression – Man can express his thoughts even without the orders of the emperor or the pope.
2. Materialistic approach—focus on the present life rather than the medieval "afterlife." Scientists spoke of conquering nature.
3. Individualism—each person's talents and experiences are important. "Renaissance Man"—someone who is simultaneously skilled in many fields (like Leonardo da Vinci).
4. Universal Priesthood — Asked in RAS 2023. Meaning: All Christians are priests of their own souls, no mediation by the Pope or a priest is necessary.
5. Secular Thinking – viewing politics, art, literature – all as separate from religion.
"Man is the measure of all things." — Protagoras — Greek philosopher (inspiration of the Renaissance)

- Renaissance → Birth of modernity. Today's democratic values, scientific thinking, freedom of expression—all have their seeds in the Renaissance.
11Relations with India and Rajasthan
A. Indirect impact on India
- Geographical discoveries: Vasco da Gama reached Calicut (Kerala) in 1498 – new sea route from Europe to India opened.
- Through this route the Portuguese, Dutch and British came to India for trade – which later turned into colonial exploitation.
- The printing press of the Renaissance later laid the foundation of English education and media in India as well.
- The ideas of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution (which were products of the Renaissance)—Liberty, Equality, Fraternity—provided the ideological basis for the Indian independence movement.
B. Relation to Rajasthan
- The painting style of the Rajput rulers of Rajasthan—Rajputana Miniature Art—was contemporary. Portrait painting also flourished in Rajputana art, like Realism, during the Renaissance.
- Geographical discoveries opened new trade routes – Marwari traders of Rajasthan took advantage of these new opportunities.
- Renaissance → Colonialism → British India → British Residency in Rajputana. This chain also affects Rajasthan.
💡 India Connection of Renaissance – From the RAS Perspective
For example, Jaipur in Rajasthan was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876—this was the influence of colonialism. Colonialism brought about trade, trade came through new sea routes, and new routes were found through the geographical discoveries of the Renaissance. So, there is a connection between the Renaissance and Rajasthan—even though it was thousands of kilometers away, its influence reached here!
